Since his first performance in Amsterdam in 2008, Andris Nelsons has become a very popular guest conductor, having returned annually to conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Nelsons now follows in the footsteps of Richard Strauss, who once led the Concertgebouw Orchestra in his early symphonic poems Tod und Verklärung and Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, which are polar opposites. Contrasting with the highly evocative adventures of a rebellious folk hero in the humorous and energetic Till Eulenspiegel is the profound philosophical programme on which Tod und Verklärung is based.

Trumpet virtuoso Håkan Hardenberger first appeared with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2012, performing trumpet concertos by Haydn and Turnage, also under Nelsons’s direction. He now returns with H.K. Gruber’s weird and wonderful Aerial.
