Sergej Prokofjev Violin Concerto No. 2
Igor Stravinsky Jeu de cartes
Maurice Ravel Daphnis et Chloé, Suite nr. 2

Two leading musicians are teaming up to perform with the orchestra for the first time: chief conductor Daniele Gatti and violinist Lisa Batiashvili, who is serving as the RCO’s Artist in Residence this season. Her residency kicks off with Prokofiev’s light-hearted Violin Concerto No. 2, in which traces of both Russian and Spanish folk music can be heard. Maestro Gatti continues the programme with two colourful ballets.

An avid poker player, Stravinsky composed his Jeu de cartes as music for a ballet in which a devilish, overconfident joker is ultimately defeated by a royal flush of hearts.

Ravel spent three years working on his ‘choreographic symphony’ Daphnis et Chloé for the legendary Ballets Russes. He described it as ‘a vast musical fresco, less concerned with archaism than with faithfulness to the Greece of my dreams, which is similar to that imagined and depicted by French artists at the end of the eighteenth century’. This irresistible music lives on primarily in the two orchestral suites Ravel compiled from the ballet score.
