Of course the Concertgebouworkest celebrates Ludwig van Beethovens’s 250th anniversary. None other than Krystian Zimerman is the soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Gustavo Gimeno conducting.
One of the greatest pianists of our time, Krystian Zimerman, joins the Concertgebouworkest in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Beethoven was a phenomenal pianist himself; his career started on the concert stage, which is clearly audible in this early concerto, designed to display his talents in Vienna. Although we detect the influences of Haydn and Mozart, it already heralds Beethoven’s headstrong approach.
Beethoven’s early concertos are perfomed less often than the later three, but they are no less demanding. For both the solist and the orchestra a performance is precision work, which is why only pianists of the highest calibre dare to take these works on. Enter Krystian Zimerman, famous for his perfectionist and carefully balanced approach to the score. The conductor is Gustavo Gimeno, whose remarkable international career began with the Concertgebouworkest.
Beethoven’s influence is undeniable. His way of composing with brief motifs as building blocks which are varied in many ways was the basis for the Second Viennese School a century later. Anton Webern’s early Fünf Sätze is still a late-romantic work, but already heralds his later compact style.
