Sibelius, Bernstein said, was like a fine mystery writer whose symphonies are full of suspense. He ‘plants clues for you right from the beginning – clues that point the way. And in the end they all link up, so that when the final light dawns, and all is made clear, you feel the thrill of having solved a great mystery, you yourself.’

Violinist Augustin Hagelich is making his debut as soloist with the RCO in Bernstein’s Serenade, a violin concerto which is also a self-portrait, and showcases all the facets of Bernstein’s complex personality.

The young Dutch composer Joey Roukens has written a new work, commissioned by the RCO and scored for the same combination of instruments. Like Bernstein, to whom Roukens has dedicated his composition, he enthusiastically moves through contrasting musical styles. Tying together classical and popular elements is completely natural to him.

Ticket holders attending the concerts on 8 and 9 February are invited to dine in the Concertgebouw’s beautiful Mirror Hall before the performance. Guests can enjoy a three-course dinner, including an aperitif and drinks, from 6.15 p.m.
