Anton Bruckner Symphony no. 4 'Romantic'

Herbert Blomstedt is one of the world’s leading conductors of Bruckner’s symphonies. The Swedish maestro is leading the Concertgebouworkest in one of Bruckner’s most popular symphonies, his ‘Romantic’ Fourth.

Bruckner’s Fourth

A Bruckner symphony is often a journey through the darkness, yet the Fourth contains more light and colour than the others. Bruckner himself called it his ‘Romantic’ symphony. Although he had no particular programme in mind, he suddenly heard the depiction of medieval scenes in it once the work was finished. After a sunrise accompanied by bells ringing, knights appear on fiery horses, and a journey through a mysterious forest full of birds ensues. But Bruckner is Bruckner: even here, a dark threat is always lurking.
