On this Family Concert for children about six years and older, we meet Romeo and Juliet, arguably the most famous young lovers of all time. They’re not allowed to see each other, though, because their families are feuding. As if they could do anything about it! Like so many other composers, the Russian composer Tchaikovsky felt so sorry for Romeo and Juliet that he decided to write a piece of music about them. Initial reactions to the work were very tepid indeed – probably the result of poor performances. The Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture quickly became a sensation all over the world. Anyone who fails to be moved by the work, especially when it’s performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of Gustavo Gimeno, must surely have a heart of stone.
