Ludwig van Beethoven Violin Concerto
Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 1

Daniele Gatti and the German master violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, who has made regular solo appearances with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since 1990, have collaborated before, and to great acclaim. Now they are turning their attention to Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, one of the most popular ever composed. Beethoven invites the solo violinist to produce his finest sound in these lush, energetic melodies.

The second half of the programme features Daniele Gatti leading the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Brahms’s Symphony No. 1. Beethoven’s symphonies had such an impact on Johannes Brahms that for many years he did not dare to write any of his own. After several attempts, he notated his first serious sketches in 1862, but he would not complete his First Symphony until 1876, apparently overcome by a burst of self-confidence. The relationship with the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth posed no problem for audiences, and quickly earned the work its nickname, ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’.
