Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 7

After leading the orchestra in Bruckner’s Eighth in 2013 – a ‘glorious Bruckner’, according to the Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad – honorary conductor Bernard Haitink now returns to conduct the Seventh Symphony. What’s so fascinating about Bruckner, Maestro Haitink once said, is his spirituality. Particularly in slow movements, Bruckner seems to transcend earthly things, seeking a more elevated reality. With his Seventh Symphony, the composer managed at long last to overcome the tremendous resistance to his music. Its compelling beauty was simply irresistible.

Debussy, too, went in search of other worlds in his music, and achieved completely different results. Juxtaposed with Bruckner’s monumental sound structures, Debussy’s Trois nocturnes are like clouds. Here Debussy succeeds in achieving his vision of ‘free, dynamic music with constantly shifting colours, forms and rhythms’.

Ticket holders attending the concert on 17 February are invited to dine in the Concertgebouw’s beautiful Mirror Hall before the performance. Guests can enjoy a three-course dinner, including an aperitif and drinks, from 6.15 p.m.
