George Enescu Caprice Roumain
Sergej Prokofjev Symphony No. 5

Under the direction of its chief conductor Daniele Gatti, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is performing Prokofiev’s upbeat Symphony No. 5. After not having written a symphony in fifteen years, the Russian composer wrote his Fifth at the end of the Second World War ‘to glorify the grandeur of the human spirit’. For many, the successful premiere in January 1945 symbolised the turning point from war to peace. The work also had a personal significance for Prokofiev: indeed, he called his Fifth Symphony ‘a high point in my creative life’.

Liviu Prunaru, who has served as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s principal violinist since 2006, has given three previous solo performances with the orchestra. Originally from Romania, he will be playing his compatriot George Enescu’s Caprice roumain. It is unclear why Enescu failed to complete his tribute to what is typically Romanian violin music. The manuscript was discovered years later in the archives of the George Enescu Museum in Bucharest and was eventually completed by Cornel Tăranu.
