Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 9

At the Mahler Festival, the Korean maestro Myung-whun Chung will be leading the Concertgebouworkest in the mighty Ninth Symphony, preceded by a commissioned work by the young Dutch composer Rick van Veldhuizen.

Symphony No. 9

Mahler’s symphonies are very autobiographical, full of glimpses into his marital problems, his love of nature, and his anger and doubts. The Ninth may arguably be the most autobiographical of them all. Every second of his last completed symphony gives the impression of being a personal drama, with moments of frenzy and absolute despair. The Symphony No. 9 is also brimming with special sound effects. Mahler had always been a brilliant orchestrator, but in this work, he manages to outdo even himself.

World premiere

All the more exciting is the juxtaposition with the composition which Rick van Veldhuizen has written for the Concertgebouworkest. This remarkable young composer does just what Mahler did in his day: confronting the orchestra with the popular music with which he grew up.
