With Opening Night, the Concertgebouworkest celebrates the start of the new concert season. Opening Night 2020 is a tribute to New York conducted by the New Yorker Alan Gilbert; and the versatile pianist Stefano Bollani brings the evening to life with swinging notes.
Alan Gilbert will be conducting the Concertgebouworkest’s sixth annual Opening Night. With swinging, colourful music by George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein and Jennifer Higdon, the concert is all about the mix of classical and popular music so typical of New York. This one-time concert with dinner buffet is a special all-in package that promises to pleasantly stimulate all the senses. Given the major impact the coronavirus is having on New York, the programme is also a show of solidarity for that dynamic musical city.
Stefano Bollani, the versatile pianist who is just as at home performing in jazz clubs as he is in major concert halls, is making a solo appearance in Gershwin’s unbeatable Rhapsody in Blue. The programme also features Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Bernstein’s glorious Overture to Candide and Jennifer Higdon’s Fanfare ritmico, an ode to the speed and energy of the modern age. Plus the orchestra also happens to have a few special surprises up its sleeve…
The Concertgebouworkest’s Opening Night is more than just the orchestra’s special season opener – it’s also a way for music lovers to contribute collectively to the future of symphonic music. The orchestra is very grateful to all concertgoers, donors and corporate partners whose contributions enable us to carry out artistic projects, pursue educational activities and purchase high-quality instruments.
