Anton Bruckner Symphony no. 4 'Romantic'

RCO meets Europe, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s tour of all the EU member states, kicks off in Ireland, and naturally with chief conductor Daniele Gatti. In Dublin, the orchestra is performing Weber’s Overture to Oberon side by side with young musicians from the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. Following Schumann’s intensely lyrical Cello Concerto, featuring the sensational soloist Sol Gabetta, is one of Bruckner’s best-loved symphonies: the Fourth, which Bruckner himself referred to as his ‘Romantic’.

From the initial peaceful horn calls which wake a medieval city in the first movement to the hunting scene in the third, and to ‘nature unleashed’ which some hear in the last movement, everything in the work aims to transport the listener to a more beautiful world which has long since vanished.
