Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony no. 7

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra visits Malta for the very first time in history as it continues its tour of all 28 member states of the European Union, RCO meets Europe. The opening work is performed Side by Side with the Malta Youth Orchestra: the young Maltese musicians share the music stands with RCO members in Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni.

Daniele Gatti then conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Mendelssohn’s beautiful Violin Concerto with concertmaster Vesko Eschkenazy performing the solo part.

Beethoven conducted the world premiere of his Symphony No. 7 in 1813 himself, even though he was almost completely deaf by then. It was a triumphant success, and the audience requested an immediate repeat performance of the second movement. Beethoven’s energetic and obsessively rhythmic masterwork has remained popular ever since. Richard Wagner admiringly characterised the symphony as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’.
