Star violinist Simone Lamsma performs Tchaikovsky’s well-loved (and terribly difficult) Violin concerto, after which conductor Elim Chan takes listeners deeper into Tchaikovsky’s Romantic fairy-tale world.

Simone Lamsma

The acclaimed violinist Simone Lamsma is performing the Tchaikovsky violin concerto. The Russian composer dedicated the work to Leopold Auer, who refused to perform it, claiming it was unplayable. Famous critics then slated the work after the premiere. Yet every single one of them was wrong. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto may demand the utmost from the soloist, but it also happens to be one of the most popular classical compositions of all time.

Conductor Elim Chan then takes listeners deeper into Tchaikovsky’s Romantic fairy-tale world. Nowhere is the well-known story of Romeo and Juliet depicted as longingly as it is in Tchaikovsky’s fantasy overture. Things get even more romantic when the Concertgebouworkest performs the suite from Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake.
