The Concertgebouworkest presents a unique event in collaboration with the Dutch National Ballet: Stravinsky’s masterpieces Le sacre du printemps, The Firebird and Petrushka, three ballets in a single evening, directed by Gustavo Gimeno.
Within just five years, Igor Stravinsky composed three masterpieces that would change the history of music and ballet forever. The Firebird, Petrushka and Le sacre du printemps occasioned wild enthusiasm, bafflement and scandal in Paris around 1910. From there, they captivated the world. A new standard had been set for composers and choreographers alike. Each of Stravinsky’s masterpieces is an experience in itself. Now the Dutch National Ballet and the Concertgebouworkest are performing all three in a single evening. The conductor is Gustavo Gimeno, whose remarkable international career began with the Concertgebouworkest.
For choreographers, these ballets have always been a challenge. Here two contemporary choreographies are juxtaposed with an original ballet by the legendary Michel Fokine. Stravinsky’s music continues to astound, even over a century later. The raw primal force of Le sacre, the fairytale magic of The Firebird and the exuberant fairground atmosphere of Petrushka: this unique ballet concert brings them all closer than ever before.
