Concertgebouworkest Young to give its very first concerts

13 August 2019

Performances new youth orchestra for ‘hidden talent’ in Amsterdam and Brussels

Following an intensive summer camp, which is still in full swing, Concertgebouworkest Young will introduce itself on the stage. This new youth orchestra is intended for hidden talent: young musicians who are in need of some extra support and who are currently underrepresented in the European orchestras.

On Friday 23 and Saturday 24 August, Young will be giving its first symphonic concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and at Flagey in Brussels respectively. Under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado, Young will perform the world premiere of Detlev Glanert’s newly commissioned Idyllium, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Julian Rachlin as soloist and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.

Preparatory concerts will feature the 72 young European musicians distributed over five large ensembles, to perform under the direction of RCO musicians at the Vondelpark Open-Air Theatre on 18 August (tickets are available free of charge via www.openluchttheater.nl) and in the new Amsterdam Hall at Gabriël Metsustraat 16, Amsterdam, on 22 August.

Summer camp

During an intensive summer camp at the Akoesticum training centre for music, dance and theatre in the Dutch city of Ede, the young musicians have been attending sectional and orchestral rehearsals, playing chamber music, receiving coachings and participating in workshops overseen by professional workshop leaders, and taking lessons with musicians of the Concertgebouworkest. In collaboration with United World Colleges Nederland a special personal development programme was developed to promote a sense of community and democratic ideals among the participants through music.

Ambassadors

From the moment they present themselves on stage, the young musicians will become ambassadors, taking the ideas behind Young – talent development, diversity and the connection with society – with them to their respective home countries.

Later this season, the online auditions for the 2020 edition of Concertgebouworkest Young will start.

Concertgebouworkest Young is only possible thanks to the generous support of funds and donors.
