Daniil Trifonov was born into a musical family in Nizhni Novgorod in 1991. His grandmother is a choral conductor, his father a composer and his mother a music theory teacher.
Trifonov started taking piano lessons at the age of five. Three years later, the whole family moved to Moscow so that he could study at the renowned Gnessin School of Music.
He won the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow in 2011, having won the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv earlier that same year.
Speaking of her young colleague, Martha Argerich said, ‘He has everything and more. What he does with his hands is technically incredible. It’s also his touch – he has tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that.’ According to the New York Times, ‘Mr. Trifonov has scintillating technique and a virtuosic flair.’ He has an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon.
Trifonov is making his first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
