Experience the orchestra from home

16 December 2020

Yesterday the Dutch government announced new measures causing the Concertgebouworkest to not be able to perform for live audiences until 20 January at the earliest.

It comes as a great disappointment to the orchestra that even those concerts most recently modified to accommodate a live audience now cannot go ahead.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has announced, however, that professional groups will continue to be allowed to come together to rehearse, perform and record – for online performances, live streams and radio and television broadcasts, for instance. It is essential that the musicians of the Concertgebouworkest continue to play together to ensure that the quality of our ensemble remains at the highest possible level – and so that we can keep sharing our music with you.

It is for this reason that we will be focusing mainly on concert recordings in the coming period so you can continue to enjoy our music on your television, computer, tablet or smartphone. Naturally, producing recordings costs money. Now that the orchestra’s income from ticket sales has dried up, we have decided to offer a number of paid streams in the coming period.

On Sunday, 20 December at 2.00 p.m. and on Tuesday, 22 December at 8.30 p.m., the orchestra will be streaming a programme conducted by the leading Russian conductor Valery Gergiev. Sergei Dogadin is making his Concertgebouworkest debut as soloist in Shostakovich’s intense Violin Concerto No. 1. Bruckner’s monumental swansong, the Symphony No. 9, then follows.

Furthermore, Fabio Luisi returns to the Concertgebouworkest after a six-year absence! He is conducting a very special Christmas Matinee featuring Verdi’s brilliant ballet music for Don Carlos, the romantic Eight Romances with tenor Piero Pretti and Alphons Diepenbrock’s atmospheric Lydische nacht. On Sunday 26 December, 2.00 p.m. this programme is available to you through streaming.

Tickets to these streams cost €15 and give you access to the stream at concertgebouworkest.nl. Naturally, you can also put any credit you have with us towards this purchase.
