Gerhild
Romberger

Alt

Gerhild Romberger studied voice with Heiner Eckels at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, where she specialised in song interpretation with Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll. Romberger’s passion lies with the concert repertoire; her extensive repertoire includes all the major contralto and mezzo-soprano parts of oratorios and other vocal works from the Baroque period to the present day. She also gives regular lieder recitals, thematically or otherwise programmed.

The German contralto maintains a special artistic relationship with conductor Manfred Honeck, with whom she has performed works including the Mahler symphonies, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis and Walter Braunfels’s Grosse Messe.

Other highlights of Romberger’s career include performances with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert Blomstedt and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Chailly. She recently performed Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with the chorus and orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, under the direction of Bernard Haitink and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde on tour with Iván Fischer and his own Budapest Festival Orchestra.

The singer has taught at the Detmold conservatory since 2003, where she herself was once a student.

Romberger will be making her first solo appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 2019–20 season.
