Gianandrea Noseda to conduct memorial concerts for Mariss Jansons

22 January 2020

The Concertgebouworkest has given its concerts on 25, 26 and 27 March the title ‘In memoriam Mariss Jansons’ in honour of its beloved former chief conductor. Maestro Jansons was to conduct these concerts himself, but passed away on 1 December 2019. The orchestra is very grateful that Gianandrea Noseda has agreed to take over the task.

The programme is partly adapted for the occasion. Instead of Schubert’s Overture in the Italian style, the opening work of the concerts will be the famous Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. The rest of the programme will remain unchanged: Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with concertmaster Vesko Eschkenazy as soloist will be followed by Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra, one of the ‘crown jewels’ on the repertoire of both Mariss Jansons and the Concertgebouworkest.

These concerts will mark the second time that Gianandrea Noseda steps in for Mariss Jansons to lead the Concertgebouworkest. The first time was on 11, 12 and 14 October 2018, when Noseda very successfully conducted the orchestra in Britten’s War Requiem.
