Although her acclaimed 2015 New York recital debut featured works by Beethoven, Debussy, Berg and Weill, the American soprano Heidi Melton has a distinctively Wagnerian voice and stage presence as demanded by such roles as Sieglinde, Brünnhilde and Isolde. She made her debut singing Sieglinde in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen under the direction of Zubin Mehta in Valencia and with the Canadian Opera Company under Johannes Debus.
As a result of her performances at the Deutsche Oper, Melton is now a favourite with Berlin audiences, having appeared there in the roles of Gutrune, the Third Norn and Sieglinde in the Ring cycle. Other roles for which she has garnered praise in Berlin include Gertrude in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel and Eglantine in Weber’s Euryanthe.
In February 2016, she sang with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Valery Gergiev at the Vienna Musikverein and Carnegie Hall in New York. Melton is making her first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra this season.
