After winning first prize at the 2004 Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition, James Gaffigan quickly made a name for himself. The American conductor is widely praised for the natural ease of his conducting and for his musical insight.
Since his appointment as chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in 2011, the orchestra’s profile, both at home and abroad, has grown thanks to their successful concerts, tours and recordings. Accordingly, his contract has been extended until 2022. Gaffigan was also appointed principal guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 2011 and has held the same position, created specially for him, with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne since 2013.
In addition to these permanent posts, Gaffigan is a welcome guest conductor with leading orchestras and opera companies throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. He has recently led the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, a production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Bavarian State Opera and performances of Le nozze di Figaro at the Vienna State Opera.
Gaffigan is making his first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
