Hempel

Conductor

Jurjen Hempel studied conducting with David Porcelijn en Kenneth Montgomery at the Utrecht Conservatorium. On invitation of Seiji Ozawa he studied as a Conducting Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center where he worked with Bernard Haitink and Lorin Maazel. Being a finalist and prize-winner at the Sibelius Conducting Competition 1995 his name was established internationally. He is principal conductor of the Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands since 2000, and artistic director of the Joensuu City Orchestra in Finland since 2013.  

Recent engagements have been with Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestras of London and Glasgow, BBC NOW Cardiff and the Deutsches Symphony Orchestra Berlin. Jurjen Hempel conducted the Concertgebouworkest in November 2012 and April 2015.

In the field of opera Hempel worked with the Mariinsky Opera Company in St. Petersburg where he conducted Richard Strauss’ Salome as the first ever Dutch conductor in that famous theatre. After a successful production of Mozart’s Enführung aus dem Serail the Opéra de Toulon appointed him as Music Director starting 2018.

Jurjen Hempel is well known as a conductor of contemporary music, regularly working with ensembles such as Asko | Schönberg, Ensemble intercontemporain and London Sinfonietta.
