Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia

The history of the Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia goes back all the way to 1595, when Pope Sixtus V issued the papal bull Ratione congruit, the act officially founding the Congregazione dei Musici. This renowned musical institution has grown over the centuries to become the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, which comprises both the chorus and an orchestra.

Today, the chorus consists of some ninety singers. Its chorus leader, Ciro Visco, was appointed in 2010. The ensemble regularly performs the great classical and more modern symphonic choral works with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Chorus and orchestra often tour together, having made multiple appearances at the BBC Proms in London and the Salzburg Festival.

The singers have also collaborated with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under the direction of Claudio Abbado and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Daniele Gatti. The chorus has made numerous recordings, many of which have received awards. One recent example is its CD featuring Verdi’s Aida, on which both the Accademia chorus and orchestra are led by its music director Antonio Pappano.

The Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia will be making its first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 2018–19 season.
