In Cologne and Amsterdam with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Sol Gabetta, Peter Eötvös conducting
On Thursday 9 and Friday 10 May 2019, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will perform a newly commissioned work by Michel van der Aa under the baton of Peter Eötvös in Cologne and Amsterdam, by the orchestra and composed with violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaya and cellist Sol Gabetta in mind as the soloists. Kopatchinskaya makes her debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. After the world premiere on 9 May at the Kölner Philharmonie as part of the Acht Brücken (Eight Bridges) festival in Cologne the performance on the 10th at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw will be the first for the Netherlands.
Michel van der Aa’s akin was commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Kölner Philharmonie/Acht Brücken, with financial support of the Performing Arts Fund NL.
The programme also includes Alla vittime senza nome (2016) by Peter Eötvös, which takes its inspiration from the horrible fate of boat refugees on the Mediterranean Sea, and Witold Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra.
At the Kölner Philharmonie on 9 May, musicologist Susanne Herzog will give an introduction to the concert from 7.00 pm ( Concert Hall).
In Amsterdam on 10 May, at 7.15 musicologist Maarten Beirens will give an introduction in Dutch at the Concertgebouw Koorzaal (Choir Hall), which includes a conversation with Michel van der Aa.
The Amsterdam concert concludes with Meet the Artists at the Spiegelzaal (Mirror Hall) of the Concertgebouw, where artistic director Joel Ethan Fried speaks with Peter Eötvös, Patricia Kopatchinskaya, Sol Gabetta and a musician from the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
