viola - academy 2019/2020

Born in 1994, Olfje van der Klein took up the violin at the age of five, studying at the music school in Leiden. As a twelve-year-old, she was admitted to the Young Talent Department of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where she studied with Kerstin Hoelen. She earned a bachelor’s degree at the same institution with Theodora Geraets in 2016.

Van der Klein went on to obtain a master’s degree studying with Philippe Graffin and completed a preparatory viola course with Tony Nys at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. She was admitted to the master’s degree programme in viola performance in 2018, completing her violin studies in June 2019. In the meantime, she is continuing to pursue a master’s degree in viola. As an Academy student, she has played the viola in the Belgian National Orchestra and was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra. Van der Klein plays both the violin and viola in the Ciconia Consort in The Hague and has served as principal of the second violin section and as deputy leader of the National Youth Orchestra on a number of tours.

Van der Klein has taken part in various courses and masterclasses, including those of the Festival d’Inverno in Brazil, the Astona International Summer Academy in Switzerland, the Swedish Aurora Festival, the Israeli Hubermann Project and the European Chamber Music Academy in Austria.
