Pablo Heras-Casado to conduct new youth orchestra RCO Young

25 January 2019

First concerts Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s international youth orchestra

In August 2019 the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s unique European youth orchestra, RCO Young, will kick off its first edition. Following an intense summer camp programme, RCO Young will present concerts in Amsterdam and Brussels under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado.

The inspiring Spanish conductor will lead RCO Young at The Concertgebouw on 23 August and at the Flagey Concert Hall in Brussels on the 24th. The youth orchestra will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor with Julian Rachlin as soloist, followed by Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.

RCO Young is made up of young talented European musicians between the ages of fourteen and seventeen and reflects the diversity of Europe. This youth orchestra is meant to cater for ‘hidden talent’ - young musicians who need extra support and who are currently under-represented in European orchestras.

Pablo Heras-Casado

Pablo Heras-Casado is one of the most sought-after conductors. He is Principal Guest Conductor at Teatro Real in Madrid and Director of the Granada Festival. Heras-Casado also enjoys a long-term collaboration with Freiburger Barockorchester featuring extensive touring and recording projects. He conducted the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in November 2012 and in February 2014.

The Spanish conductor devotes much of his time and attention to education and talent development. He has conducted the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE) and the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.

summer camp

At the RCO Young summer camp the young musicians will be participating in an intensive programme of group and orchestral rehearsals, chamber music, coaching sessions and workshops led by professional workshop leaders, and classes given by members of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The training goes beyond music, though. In collaboration with United World Colleges Netherlands, they will also be attending workshops focusing on personal development, democracy and social responsibility.  After the concerts on 23 and 24 August, these young musicians will be ambassadors, taking the ideas behind RCO Young – talent development, diversity and involvement in society – with them to their respective home countries.

nomination and application

The first RCO Young summer camp is taking place from 7 to 25 August 2019 at Akoesticum, national training centre for music, dance and theatre in the Dutch city of Ede. Participation is free, and travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed.

Music teachers, conductors of local youth orchestras, school bands and ensembles, as well as other professionals, are invited to nominate talented young musicians for an online audition. Audition applications for the first RCO Young summer camp should be submitted before 31 January 2019.
