Pekka Kuusisto is internationally known as a soloist and director, and has garnered praise for his spontaneity and fresh approach to both the standard and the less traditional repertoire. The Finnish violinist is also an enthusiastic advocate of contemporary music, having collaborated with composers including Nico Muhly, Daníel Bjarnason and Thomas Adès. He premiered Sebastian Fagerlund’s violin concerto Darkness in Light to great acclaim in 2012.
Kuusisto regularly performs in chamber music settings with such musicians as Anne Sofie von Otter, Nicolas Altstaedt and Olli Mustonen, but also with ‘electronic musician’ Brian Crabtree, jazz trumpet player Arve Henriksen and the Dutch neurologist Erik Scherder. His performances as principal violinist leading chamber orchestras have also garnered high praise. In that capacity, he maintains permanent ties with the Australian ACO Collective and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnesota. He is also artistic director of Our Festival, an acclaimed and innovative chamber music festival held annually just north of Helsinki.
Kuusisto is making his first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 2017–18 season.
He plays a Stradivarius on loan to him from the Beare’s International Violin Society.
