Santtu-Matias
Rouvali

Conductor

Heralded by The Guardian as ‘the latest sit-up-and-listen talent to emerge from the great Finnish conducting tradition’, Santtu-Matias Rouvali studied with Jorma Panula, Leif Segerstam and Hannu Lintu at the Sibelius Academy.

Rouvali was recently appointed chief conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra, succeeding his compatriot Esa-Pekka Salonen. He will take up the role for the 2021/22 season, having become principal guest conductor of the London orchestra in 2017.

Since 2017, Rouvali is also chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, with which he made a successful tour of Scandinavia, accompanied by pianist Hélène Grimaud. With the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is chief conductor since 2013, he has performed the complete Sibelius symphonies and recorded a very successful CD featuring the Nielsen and Sibelius violin concertos in collaboration with Baiba Skride. He has also accompanied the orchestra on its first tour to Japan.

Santtu-Matias Rouvali makes regular guest appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

He has added several opera productions to his busy schedule as an orchestral conductor, including Verdi’s La forza del destino and the world premiere of Olli Kortekangas’s Veljeni vartija at the Tampere Opera.

Rouvali made his first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 2019–20 season.
