Santtu-Matias
Rouvali

Conductor

Heralded by The Guardian as ‘the latest sit-up-and-listen talent to emerge from the great Finnish conducting tradition’, Santtu-Matias Rouvali studied with Jorma Panula, Leif Segerstam and Hannu Lintu at the Sibelius Academy.

The young musician was appointed chief conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013. Highlights of their collaboration so far include the performance of the complete Sibelius symphonies, the orchestra’s first tour to Japan and their successful CD featuring the Nielsen and Sibelius violin concertos in collaboration with Baiba Skride.

Rouvali also assumed the post of chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in 2017, with which he made a successful tour of Scandinavia, accompanied by pianist Hélène Grimaud.

In addition, he is principal guest conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra of London and makes regular guest appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

He has also added several opera productions to his busy schedule as an orchestral conductor, including Verdi’s La forza del destino and the world premiere of Olli Kortekangas’s Veljeni vartija at the Tampere Opera.

Rouvali is making his first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 2019–20 season.
