Santtu-Matias
Rouvali

Conductor

Heralded by The Guardian as ‘the latest sit-up-and-listen talent to emerge from the great Finnish conducting tradition’, Santtu-Matias Rouvali studied with Jorma Panula, Leif Segerstam and Hannu Lintu at the Sibelius Academy.

Since 2017, Rouvali is chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, with which he made a successful tour of Scandinavia, accompanied by pianist Hélène Grimaud. With the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is chief conductor since 2013, he has performed the complete Sibelius symphonies. He has also accompanied the orchestra on its first tour to Japan.

In addition, with effect from the 2021-22 season he is chief conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra - where he had been principal guest conductor since 2017 - succeeding his compatriot Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Santtu-Matias Rouvali makes regular guest appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

He has added several opera productions to his busy schedule as an orchestral conductor, including Verdi’s La forza del destino and the world premiere of Olli Kortekangas’ Veljeni vartija at the Tampere Opera.

Rouvali made a very convincing first appearance with the Concertgebouworkest in January 2020, conducting Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex and works by Verdi and Verbey.
