Under the baton of Mariss Jansons, the Concertgebouworkest performs Tod und Verklärung. Richard Strauss’s tone poem describes the last hours of a man and the realisation of his ideal.
Richard Strauss once wrote about Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration): “The idea was to write a tone poem describing the last hours of a man who had striven for the highest ideals. […] The soul leaves his body, to discover in the eternal cosmos the magnificent realisation of the ideal that could not be fulfilled here below.” The serious subject of Tod und Verklärung was very much what would have been expected of a sensitive philosophically-minded man of the 19th century such as Richard Strauss.
Mariss Jansons was chief conductor of the Concertgebouworkest from 2004 to 2015. Jansons has been music director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2003. He has made numerous appearances throughout the world as a guest conductor of the Berlin, the Vienna and the London Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the leading orchestras in the United States. Jansons has been awarded various honours and awards.
