Concerts in London, Lucerne and Berlin with chief conductor Daniele Gatti
Early September 2017, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and its chief conductor Daniele Gatti will undertake a summer tour of European cities. The tour will take the musicians to the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall in London (1 and 2 September), the Lucerne Festival (4 and 5 September) and the Berlin Philharmonie (6 September).
The concerts in London and Berlin are part of RCO meets Europe, the orchestra's tour of all 28 member states of the European Union between 2016 and 2018.
In both London and Lucerne the orchestra performs two concert programmes.
On September 1 (Lucerne) and 4 (London), Daniele Gatti conducts Rihm's IN-SCHRIFT and Bruckner's Symphony No. 9.
Haydn's Symphony No. 82, 'L'ours', and Mahler's Symphony No. 4 will be performed on September 2 and 5, respectively. The soloist in the Mahler symphony is soprano Chen Reiss, who in September 2016 made her RCO debut in Mahler's Symphony No. 2.
A much lauded part of RCO meets Europe is Side by Side: in each of the 28 EU member states, one opening work is performed Side by Side with members of a local youth orchestra. At the Berlin Philharmonie, the RCO will share the stage with members of the National Youth Orchestra of Germany in a performance of Weber's Overture to Euryanthe. The programme then continues with Rihm's IN-SCHRIFT and Bruckner's Symphony No. 9.
