The book Toonaangevend to be published in English as Iconic

30 August 2016

The book 'Iconic – How to Create a Virtuous Circle of Success' focuses on fourteen iconic organisations, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which have managed to stay at the top of their game for half a century, a century or longer.

This week sees the release of Iconic – How to Create a Virtuous Circle of Success. The book was presented yesterday in Lucerne, where the orchestra has given two concerts over the last few days. The very first copy was bestowed on Daniele Gatti, chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra by Xavier Bekaert. Jan Raes, managing director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, co-wrote the book with management consultants Xavier Bekaert, Gillis Jonk and Phebo Wibbens. The preface was penned by Tom de Swaan, chairman of the Zurich Insurance Group.

The book focuses on fourteen iconic organisations, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which have managed to stay at the top of their game for half a century, a century or longer. The book is the translation of a slightly revised version of Toonaangevend, published by Lannoo in 2013.

What do the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the restaurant elBulli and the All Blacks rugby team have in common which allow them to remain successful, while the renown of most other organisations comes and goes? The authors have arrived at three key features: an uncompromising approach to talent selection, teamwork which enables the team to surpass itself, and the desire to continue to push boundaries. These elements create a virtuous circle: by continually pushing boundaries, these organisations exert an ever-greater power of attraction on the very best talent. The book gives a unique insight into what managers and directors can do to ensure that their own organisations achieve and maintain iconic status.

Iconic is published by LID Publishing (New York and London) and is available from Amazon and other leading online shops. The third edition of the Dutch version Toonaangevend was released this summer. A Japanese translation is also in preparation.
