Born in 1995, the Portuguese double bassist José Moreira earned a bachelor’s degree in September 2017, studying with Luis Cabrera and Rinat Ibragimov at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Prior to that, he had completed the first year of his bachelor studies in Lisbon under the tutelage of Manuel Rêgo.
In Portugal, he performed with Orquestra XXI, and even as principal of the double bass section on a tour, and while a student with the Gulbenkian Youth Orchestra, the Artave Orchestra and the Aproarte Orchestra.
Since moving to London, Moreira has stood in a number of times with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, enrolling on programmes with both to gain orchestral experience.
Moreira has won multiple prizes, including second prize (no first prize awarded) at the Prémio Jovens Músicos and an honourable mention at the youth competition of the Bass2012 biennial bass convention in Copenhagen. In 2016, he embarked on a study of Baroque bass with Cecelia Bruggemeyer, with support from the Guildhall School Trust.
