About this concert
Amsterdam has been harbouring outside influences for 750 years. The more diverse the mix, the stronger the city’s character. As a city of music, Amsterdam is made up of many voices. Around 1600, people would come from far and wide to visit the composer and city organist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Since 1888, the Concertgebouw and the Concertgebouw Orchestra have served as international ambassadors of the city – and of the Netherlands.
In the twentieth century, the composer and inspiring teacher Louis Andriessen was for years a magnet for young musicians from all over the world. Many of them would go on to further enrich musical life here, such as Jeff Hamburg and the former Composer Laureate of the Netherlands Calliope Tsoupaki. Brand-new works by both have been programmed on this Saturday Matinee concert. With Andriessen, who passed away in 2021, we will board the Ship of Fools and enter the hellish City of Dis, a city of water and fire.
This programme was made possible thanks to the financial support of Ammodo.
