About this concert
Bijlmer Klassiek is the special collaboration between the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Bijlmer Parktheater in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. This edition focuses on Lodewijk (Lou) Lichtveld (1903-1996), better known by his pen name Albert Helman: writer, politician, resistance fighter, organist and a surprisingly versatile composer. Thirty years after his passing, musicians from the Concertgebouw Orchestra perform a selection of his work, including Songs of Kalua and the score for Joris Ivens’ celebrated film Rain, accompanied by a screening of the film itself. Author, poet, literary scholar and Suriname specialist Michiel van Kempen will provide an insightful introduction.
