About this concert
The Essentials series introduces you to the masterpieces you will be happy to know, performed by the world-famous Concertgebouw Orchestra and complete with a lively introduction by the incomparable Thomas Vanderveken. At Essentials we welcome a new generation of music lovers, and the concerts typically have a pleasant informal atmosphere.
Essentials starts at 9 p.m. with an imaginative introduction to the programme (in Dutch).
They are perhaps the most famous four notes in the history of music: Beethoven’s ‘da-da-da-daaaa’ motif like a knock at the door in the Fifth Symphony. This motif is the germ from which unfolds an extraordinarily ingenious structure that sounds as urgent today as it did over 200 years ago. We are performing this exhilarating early nineteenth-century masterpiece under the direction of Riccardo Minasi.
But first, we are performing another nineteenth-century hit, one that is largely forgotten today – in fact, this marks the very first performance of Emilie Mayer’s Faust Overture in the Netherlands!
