About this concert
The Essentials series introduces you to the masterpieces you will be happy to know, performed by the world-famous Concertgebouw Orchestra and complete with a lively introduction by the incomparable Thomas Vanderveken. At Essentials we welcome a new generation of music lovers, and the concerts typically have a pleasant informal atmosphere.
Essentials starts at 9 p.m. with an imaginative introduction to the programme (in Dutch).
Mitsuko Uchida is an uncontested authority as an interpreter of the Viennese classics. Beethoven wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2 as a vehicle to showcase himself as a pianist in Vienna. In no other work can we hear Mozart’s influence on Beethoven as clearly as in this piano concerto. Yet the young Beethoven regularly undercuts Mozart’s elegant perfection with light-hearted and surprising inventions. Typically Beethoven!
Vladimir Jurowski opens the programme with the Overture to 'L'isola disabilitata' by Beethoven’s teacher Joseph Haydn. A typical 'Sturm und Drang' work full of drama and contrasts, it clearly foreshadows Beethoven.
The young Beethoven regularly undercuts Mozart’s elegant perfection with light-hearted and surprising inventions.
