About this concert
Music from the Romantic era is a cornerstone of the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s repertoire, and Fabio Luisi is an expert in that genre. But not all ‘romantics’ are the same. Tchaikovsky bared his Russian soul in his Fifth Symphony. The piece encompasses a broad range of emotions. And this symphony offers a splendid example of the composer’s versatility: in it, he alternates his sense of melody, his gift for ballet music, and his love of folk melodies.
The great pianist Yefim Bronfman brings to life the world of ultraromantic composer Franz Liszt. Liszt, a brilliant composer and pianist, managed simultaneously to embrace heaven and hell. His Piano Concerto No. 2 combines diabolic virtuosity with intense tenderness. Weber’s brand of romanticism, however, has a more ethereal character. In his ‘Oberon’ Overture, listeners will hear bird sounds, quasi-medieval ‘knightly music,’ and a hint of exoticism.
