About this concert
Our honorary guest conductor, Iván Fischer, will conduct a particularly attractive combination of fairy tales by Igor Stravinsky and Kurt Weill. Stravinsky’s famous breakthrough work The Firebird is a quintessentially Russian fairy-tale ballet, brimming with vivid colours and rhythms. There is no need for sets or ballet dancers: the orchestral suite effortlessly conjures up the images in your mind’s eye.
A special treat is Kurt Weill’s ‘winter fairy tale’ Der Silbersee. This cheerful opera is rarely performed, despite the infectious melodies in which Weill always excelled. The work was banned by the Nazis because of its socially critical message. Subsequent performances were hampered by the high demands placed on the singers and actors. In our concert version, the Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans is one of the wonderful soloists. A wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with a true musical gem!
