About this concert

Concertmaster Liviu Prunaru invited like-minded string players to join him, one at a time, in a concert which builds up gradually - ‘crescendo’. He starts with music for solo violin from his compatriot, the Romanian composer George Enescu. Prunaru’s wife and colleague, Valentina Svyatlovskaya, then joins him for the passionate Allegro from Prokofiev’s Sonata for Two Violins. After a movement from Dvořáks Terzetto for two violins and viola, the sound becomes fuller with movements from Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1 and Brahms’ String Quintet No. 1. After the interval, all six musicians will be performing Tchaikovsky’s string sextet, Souvenir de Florence, a late romantic masterpiece brimming with Mozartian elegance and Italian lyricism.

Musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra perform their own programmes in the Recital Hall as part of the Close-up chamber music series. Each of these concerts is unique and performed only once as part of the series. It’s the very best way to experience the individual qualities of the orchestral musicians! These intimate concerts are organised by the Friends of the Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
