About this concert
Amsterdam has been harbouring outside influences for 750 years. The more diverse the mix, the stronger the city’s character. Amsterdam is a city of many voices, a polyphony that is echoed in its music. Tania Kross sings Dutch songs in new orchestral arrangements, while the rich culture of the Antilles resounds in arias from the opera Katibu di shon, the first opera in Papiamentu. In Theo Verbey’s Notturno, a world of music resonates in an Amsterdam stairwell.
Greek-born composer Calliope Tsoupaki has been living and working in Amsterdam for over 35 years and was Composer Laureate of the Netherlands from 2018 to 2021. For the Concertgebouw Orchestra she wrote a newly commissioned work. Conductor Bas Wiegers concludes this programma of many voices with de exciting music of Mexican composer Silvestre Revualtas evoking the landscapes and pre-colombian cultures of Mexico.
