About this concert

Transishon, the theme of this edition of Bijlmer Klassiek, refers to the legendary 1970s album by Curaçao born jazz musician Erwin Prudencia. Vernon Chatlein i su Zumbi and musicians from the Concertgebouworkest blend jazz and classical chamber music with the rhythms and percussion of Curaçao. This concert forms a musical bridge between Curaçao and Cuba — the birthplace of Leo Brouwer, whose distinctive compositions have long reflected his homeland.

This special programme was curated by Vernon Chatlein and Mirelys Morgan Verdecia, both of whom studied in Havana at the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán. Cuban violinist Mirelys Morgan Verdecia lived in Spain and Germany before joining the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2013. Vernon Chatlein, originally from Curaçao, lived in Cuba for two years before moving to Amsterdam in 2009 to study at the conservatory under Randal Corsen, whose music was performed by the Concertgebouw Orchestra as recently as March.
