conductor

Andrés Orozco-Estrada

As a child Andrés Orozco-Estrada played violin, at fifteen he was taking conducting lessons and at nineteen he was studying with Uroš Lajovic in Vienna.

In 2004, the Colombian conductor made his debut with the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich. He became its assistant conductor, and in 2009 he was made chief conductor. He was also the chief conductor of the Basque National Orchestra.

Since the acclaim that followed two concerts as a last-minute substitute with the Wiener Philharmoniker, Andrés Orozco-Estrada has been a regular guest with the orchestra. He has also regularly conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestre National de France and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

From 2014 to 2021, Orozco-Estrada was chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony in Frankfurt, from 2014 to 2022 of the Houston Symphony, and between 2020 and 2022 also of the Vienna Symphony. After his farewell concert with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony in June 2021, the Frankfurter Rundschau praised his characteristic ‘combination of dancing playfulness and an unconditional pursuit of perfection’. Recently, Orozco-Estrada has been focusing more than ever on opera productions (including La Traviata in the Staatsoper Berlin) and ‘his’ Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, the youth orchestra of which he is chief conductor.

Andrés Orozco-Estrada made his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in May 2015. In August 2023 he will lead the fourth edition of Concertgebouworkest Young; in June 2024 he will conduct the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Beethoven’s Fidelio at Dutch National Opera.
