Santtu-Matias Rouvali

Santtu-Matias Rouvali is principal conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra since 2021 and chief conductor of Gothenburg Symphony since 2017, alongside his longstanding chief conductor and artistic director position with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland.

In the summer of 2022, Rouvali made his BBC Proms debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra, after which a tour of Italy in September was the first of many touring highlights with Philharmonia, including trips to Spain, Germany and Hungary.

He continues his relationships with such orchestras as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Symphoniker, Münchner Philharmoniker and the New York Philharmonic.

Rouvali made a very convincing first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in January 2020, conducting Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex and works by Verdi and Verbey. He returned in 2021, 2023 and most recently in January 2024, when he conducted works by Schuber, Chopin and Farrenc.

While continuing to build on his discography with his orchestras in London and at home in Tampere, Rouvali is adding to Gothenburg Symphony’s legacy with an ambitious Sibelius cycle, the first three discs of which won numerous awards including the Gramophone Editor’s Choice award, two Chocs de Classica, a prize from the German Record Critics and a Diapason d’Or.

Rouvali studied with Jorma Panula, Leif Segerstam and Hannu Lintu at the Sibelius Academy.
