Léo Genet

Léo Genet joined the Concertgebouw Orchestra in August 2018.

Born in 1993, Léo Genet began learning bass at the age of seven in Jean-Marie Verne's class at the Conservatoire Régional de Lyon. He obtained his Diploma of Musical Studies in 2010, and the same year entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse of Lyon in the class of Bernard Cazauran and François Montmayeur, then the class of Cédric Carlier. In 2013 he obtained his bachelor’s degree, and his degree in musicology from Lyon 2 University.

Genet participated in the French Youth Orchestra and the European Union Youth Orchestra, playing principal bass in both orchestras.

Upon obtaining his master’s degree in Lyon, the Frenchman entered the class of Rick Stotijn and Olivier Thiery to the Conservatorium of Amsterdam for further master’s studies, then joined the academy of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016/17.

Léo Genet has regularly played with the Orchestre National de Lyon and the Opéra de Lyon, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2017/18 season, before joining the Concertgebouworkest, he was a member of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

In 2019 a double bass, built by B.S. Fendt II in London (ca. 1840), was purchased with the support of Ammodo. This instrument was restored by the previous owner in Tokyo. Léo has received this double bass on loan from the Foundation Concertgebouworkest.
