Mariya Semotyuk-Schlaffke
Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Maria Semotyuk-Schlaffke started taking music lessons at the age of four. She studied flute at the conservatories in Lviv and Leipzig with Irmela Boßler, among others. She also studied improvisation, music education and contemporary music. Mariya Semotyuk-Schlaffke continued her studies in Renate Greiss-Armin’s soloists’ class at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe.
After completing her training, she served as first principal piccolo with the Staatskapelle in Halle before joining the Concertgebouworkest in 2007. In 2009, she made it to the final round of the prestigious Kobe International Flute Competition, winning the special prize for best interpretation of a Romantic work. In addition to her position with the orchestra, she enjoys playing chamber music.
