Raymond Munnecom

Born in the Dutch village of Neeritter in 1968, Raymond Munnecom received his earliest training at the Kreato Music School in Thorn. As a boy, he played the euphonium in the St Lucia Wind Band Musical Society and in the National Youth Wind Band of the Netherlands. He started studying the trombone at the age of seventeen.

Munnecom studied at the Conservatorium Maastricht and the Sweelinck Conservatoire in Amsterdam with Jacques Banens, former principal trombonist of the Concertgebouworkest. While a student in Amsterdam, Munnecom decided to switch from the tenor to the bass trombone. He earned a degree in trombone and in wind and fanfare band conducting.

Raymond Munnecom joined the Concertgebouworkest as a bass trombonist in 1997. Since then, he has also taught at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Munnecom has organised various projects and tours for the brass ensemble of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, including tours to Copenhagen, Chicago and Suriname.

He has served as permanent brass coach with the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands since 2005. In 2006, he completed a part-time degree programme in music pedagogy. He continues to take regular lessons with Rex Martin, a tuba player and brass teacher who hails from Chicago.

Raymond Munnecom plays a contrabass trombone in F "Universal" by Thein and a German bass trombone, on loan from the Foundation Concertgebouworkest.
