Born in Saint Petersburg in 1957, Andrey Boreyko studied conducting at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. He won prizes at the Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice and (in 1989) at the Kirill Kondrashin Competition in Amsterdam.

Boreyko served as music director of the Warsaw Philharmonic (2019–2024), Orchestre National de Belgique (2012–2017), and the Naples Philharmonic in Florida (2014–2022). A popular guest of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Boreyko has conducted critically acclaimed programmes with them in recent years, with repertoire including Shostakovich's Symphonies No. 5 and No. 13 'Babi Yar', and Tchaikovsky's Fourth.  

In addition, he has guest-conducted major orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Recent highlights include performances with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and with the symphony orchestras of Sydney and Adelaide.

Recordings include Silvestrov's Sixth Symphony and Shostakovich symphonies with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and Górecki's Fourth Symphony with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which premiered the work under Boreyko's baton.
