Born in Munich, Bastian Spier received his first horn lessons in 2012 from Manfred Neukirchner before continuing his studies with Johannes Kaltenbrunner. From 2020 to 2023, at the pre-college of Munich’s University of Music and Performing Arts, he studied with Johannes Hinterholzer, Carsten Duffin, and Hasko Kröger. He continued his studies in 2023 with Sibylle Mahni at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin. Further important artistic inspiration came from Christoph Eß.
A multiple first-prize winner at the national ‘Jugend musiziert’ competition, Bastian has received special awards from the Heidi Arnold Foundation, the Sparkasse, and the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.
He gained orchestral experience with the Bundesjugendorchester, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Camerata Hamburg, the Münchner Symphoniker, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. From 2024 to 2025, he held a temporary contract with the Bamberger Symphoniker.
As a soloist, Bastian has appeared with orchestras including the Philharmonisches Orchester Vorpommern and the Bremer Philharmoniker.
Alongside orchestral playing, chamber music is central to his artistic work. He is a member of the woodwind quintet Ensemble Quinton, which has received scholarships from Villa Musica, the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb, and the Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund.
