Padding: Ick seg adieu (1540)

Mariss Jansons conducted his farewell to the Concertgebouw Orchestra with Martijn Padding’s Ick Seg Adieu. The applicable title comes from a Dutch folk song, on which Padding based his composition.

Ick Seg Adieu van Martijn Padding

In 2015 the Concertgebouw Orchestra commissioned Martijn Padding to compose a short work to be performed at Mariss Jansons’ farewell concert. Padding chose a 16th-century Dutch folk song, Ick Seg Adieu, as the basis of his composition. Padding describes his compositional method as a “fascination for clarity and the opposition between the logical and the non-logical. I’m looking for artfulness rather than the great dramatic gesture.” His desire for artfulness in Ick Seg Adieu is exemplified in his use of highly unusual instruments such as the Waldteufel.

He was appointed chief conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2004. Their alliance was unprecedented and intensive, which instigated world-wide recognition. For his farewell concert Jansons chose compositions inspired by folk music or folk poetry.
